Pluid: The National Comfort Blanket

Here is my little contribution towards Pluid: The National Comfort Blanket-an incredible initiative by Claire Halpin and Madeleine Hellier. The brief was to produce a piece of work 15cm x 15cm, of something that gave comfort during the pandemic, with an explanation of the work. This is mine:

‘During the first six months of the pandemic I found myself looking out of my windows-a lot. In the mornings between 10am and 2pm if the sun is shining, it makes the window box shadows flow as the breeze travels through the plants, and clouds pass. The string of heart-shaped fairy lights, that I attached to the handle of the window in March 2020 in memory of those who had passed away, casts another beautiful shadow. I still take great comfort in this teeny slice of unpredictable beauty, projected straight into my sitting room, just for me.’

Winter Show 2020, at Courthouse Gallery & Studios

I was so delighted that my work was accepted for inclusion for the Winter Show at the gorgeous Courthouse Gallery in Ennistymon, but so disappointed for myself, the other exhibitors and particularly for the team at The Courthouse when I heard that it will be closing on Christmas Eve after only 10 days of being open. Covid has been so hard on this industry, it’s completely heartbreaking. This painting has travelled far more than I have this last year :(

139th Royal Ulster Academy of Arts Open

I was absolutely delighted to hear that my piece ‘September’ resulted in my receiving the Irish News Prize at this years RUA Open which is currently running at the Ulster Museum until the 2nd of January. It subsequently sold, so I would like to thank the Irish News along with the purchaser, as it is always a little bit of a surprise when a piece sells, as it’s so easy to get a bit lost in self-doubt, and the award gave me a much needed confidence boost, and I’m extremely grateful.

Cairde Visual 2019

My painting ‘I was There’ (yet to be updated onto my website), is currently on exhibition at The Model in Sligo, having been selected as part of the wonderful Cairde Visual 2019. The exhibition runs until the 18th of August.

137th Royal Ulster Academy Exhibition

I’m delighted to hear that one of my paintings (Self Portrait) has been selected as part of the 137th Annual Exhibition, which is being held at The Ulster Museum from the 19th October until the 6th of January.

*Update… Over the moon to hear that this piece has been acquired by the Civil Service of Northern Ireland, thank you so much!
